Hi,

Looking to make a Chalkboard for the kids to use. I was thinking a 1.2 X 2.4 Sheet of Plywood, but was wondering what thickness I'd need to go to to ensure it remains rigid and doesn't flex/wobble..
It will be moved in/out of use so I don't want it mega heavy!

Anyone done similar or can suggest?

Thanks

Is that “1.2 x 2.4” feet or metres?

Is it going to be freestanding or wall mounted?
1.2 X 2.4 Metres, sorry.

I plan to put some hooks on it so it will hang from the garden fence/wall but might be free standing as well. If I have it freestanding I'll do something to make sure it can't be pulled over.

I used some 9 or 10mm plywood for a blackboard for the kitchen, works well but it is mounted to the wall.

Not sure if you have thought about the surface finish of your blackboard? The surface of plywood can be quite rough so I painted and sanded - painted and sanded again a few times until the surface was smooth and black. It doesn't stay black for long though!

Any ply at 2.4m long is going to be heavy, a piece of 9mm ply in your dimensions will be around 13kg.

As above, at a thickness sufficient to stop the board flexing, that’s going to be a heavy piece of wood that will need to securely fastened to a wall or similar so that it doesn’t fall onto a child.

It might be a lot less hassle to get a smaller easel type blackboard.

Did one for the girls mud kitchen and I used regular ply and after a while it de-laminated due to the moisture, make sure to get external grade or marine ply.
