OK, so I'm looking for anyone else who has tried this

To cut a long story short, I've got a 775 motherboard and a perfectly good Akasa Evo 120, but no 775 mounting kit. Looking at the base of the cooler, I already have 4 holes at the appropriate spacings. I also have two long bolts with springs on that came with the Evo 120, and get used for 939 fitting.

I've just gone onto the auction site, and purchased a metal 775 backplate with M3 bolt fittings, so my current masterplan is to simply buy four M3 bolts and bolt straight through the board leaving out the springs, and trim off any excess.

Anyone see any flaws?
I'm presuming the only thing the springs are actually used for is keeping an even tightness with two bolts, and are pretty much redundant with four?
Just this saves me the better part of £20 :p

how about spacers, so u dont screw it down too tight?
presumeably the space from top of mobo to top of cpu or will the springs act as spacers, as they will eventually compress to a final thickness

Oddly enough, in the current setup they don't really seem to. The springs sit between the top of the current nut and the base plate of the Evo 120, and there's just a gap between this and the base of the socket. (This is on 939)

Will have to consider spacers, the trouble with those is finding something big enough and non-conductive to sit there.

So, the bodge works perfectly, even though neither the bracket or the fixings were designed for 775. (Didn't bother with spacers in the end, couldn't see any real point to them)
A small observation for anyone else considering this:
The clearance for a screwdriver is basically non-existant, even when taking the fan off the cooler. I managed it, but it was a pig of a job.
No idea why they decided on a separate 775 mounting kit either, the holes are in the stock mounting bracket, just never used. (Possibly some bright spark discovered the screwdriver clearance!)
