I'm after a new desk and after taking a look at ikea and john lewis for rough ideas of price and looks, i've decided im going to build my own. that way it will be everything i need and the perfect size.

Currently learning cad at college so I thought this might make a good project for a portfolio too if I take photos of it in stages. Also got a cnc router too in the garage which is a bonus and will help me with an accurate cutout of the top desk. currently still a rough drawing, corner bottom shelf also needs a skirt putting on it too and colours are done so you can tell what is what, my theme is going to be a high glodd black finish i belive but if i painted it all in cad black you would just see a blob.

Currently need somewhere for the keyboard, was thinking sliders but Im more inclined with a sort of swing arm where it swings out on a pibot with an elbow at min point to give me full ajustability over my lap.. problem being i wouldnt know where to look for one so small as to do this.. I could possible make my own and have it lock together with wing nuts some how but id much prefer to buy something like this..

I've included accurately sized drawings of my xbox, sky digital, tv, monitors, mouse mat, mouse and keyboard too to get a feel of the actual positioning.. desk would be going in top right corner of my bedroom with my bed in the bottom left corner hence the positioning of the tv to face it.

Was just wondering what changes you would make and if you would find this suitable?

these are the sort of answers i need.

Why would you say so?

this is my current desk which is abit old and clutterred im my opinion.

I got the shape idea from a link on these forums, but instead of using plain poles like that person had, i went for actual cupboards and draws and resonable storage, whlist still trying to keep room for my legs and chair.

How on earth are you going to use that big monitor? from 10" away? or with your neck turned to one side?

thats a 40" tv and i only really use that for watching tv through sy, gaming on my xbox or films from my pc. dont actually use it for general pc useage hence the 2 monitors side by side for that

Gloss black is going to be a nightmare to keep clean, just like most glass furniture is.

If it were me I'd make the desk as deep and wide and as simple as possible but those are just my tastes.

Something like a work top with some legs attached. Then perhaps CAD some drawers to go in underneath? Gives you some flexibility.

A keyboard on a pivot would just bounce up and down.

Mice are nicer to use if they overhang your legs in some way, not pushed out to the side.

Personally I'd hang any monitor off the wall, stands are surprisingly annoying wastes of space.
