Right, I'm after some help.

Basically I want to make a DJ stand for my turntables/mixer/speakers. The Ikea Expedit bookcase is the cheapest and slickest looking desk, easy to build and everything fits on there well. There's one issue though - the monitor stands.

To get the monitors up to ear level, I'm going to have to build a couple of monitor stands that fix onto the expedit. A bit like this:

My question is: How do I build those monitor stands?

Here's a better picture of the sort of thing I'm after:

I understand that chrome pipe is used in the picture above, but how is it attached to the desk? Where do I get this equipment from? Where do I get the actual wooden squares that the monitors stand on, the clamps, and the pipe cut to size?

Another thing to note is, the expedit itself is NOT solid wood (apparently). Its meant to be hollow door-like material like this:

If this material is weak, is there any point in going through the gripe of trying to make monitor stands when the wood isn't strong enough to hold a couple of heafty speakers?

Any advice/solutions would be much appreciated.

You could try having a gander at Ikeahacker for some similar projects and see if anything there inspires you. There are quite a few tuts on how to increase the stability of most Ikea bookcases, most involve wedging another piece of wood inside the hollowed out bits so I'm not sure if thats something you'll want to do.

I made a monitor riser for my Jonas desk using a Lack shelf and the Capita kitchen cupboard legs, and a similar approach might work for the speaker and monitor stands, although I'm not sure what the max height is for them. (They're the same style as the legs holding up the bookcase in the first pic you posted.)

As for fixing them to the desk, the best way would probably be to bolt them through, but as most Ikea stuff seems to be honeycombed, I'm not 100% sure if that will be enough for a long term fix.
