It's been a while since I last dipped my toe in the DIY build world.

My old server has packed in so I was considering getting an HP Microserver Gen8. However, I thought I'd spec components out to see what it got me. I'm not after a powerhouse as it will be used for mainly storage and serving media. It will be kept in a hall cupboard so doesn't need to be whisper quiet but I don't want a hairdryer :)

I have picked out the following components (I already have 4 HDDs);

  • Fractal Design Node 304 Case
  • ASRock B85M-ITX Motherboard
  • Intel Celeron G1820
  • 1 x 8Gb DDR3 1600MHz
  • Zalman ZM500-GS PSU

Does that look ok? Any gotcha's I need to watch for such as the size of the case, PSU being too big, etc?

If you just want it for storage and serving media why not just get a Microserver N54L, at the moment they are going for £130, ok they have been cheaper with cash back in the past but still for £130 they are very good value for money and will do exactly what you need.

I'm torn between the N54L and recycling some old hardware.

The N54L ticks all the boxes, it does lack in CPU grunt though, which can apparently cause issues with streaming 1080p in Plex.

This aslong as you only want 1 stream and arent running anything silly on it at same time.

yes there are caveats.

id go for the g3258 myself. more grunt and potential power.

if i was to do it again i would build my own. the N54L is amazing for the size but it does lack and there isnt really any upgradability.

The N54L can stream multiple 1080p at the same time no issue, it is only when it actually needs to transcode said 1080p that it can start to struggle.

I have the N54L now, just about all my devices can direct play so no transcoding required. Awesome little thing it is!
