Hi folks,

Im rapidly running out of storage space in my 2x Macpros, but, ive got 6x 1.5tb HDDs that arent being used from when i upgraded to 2tb drives.

Ive been looking at standalone diskless NAS solutions, but they seem very expensive for what they are, as im more than happy to build my own, im sure it would be much cheaper to do a basic headless build and run something like FreeNAS OS software.

Basically, i think ill need;

Motherboard with loads of SATA headers, onboard GFX and GB network.
CPU
RAM
Case capable of 8+ 3.5" HDDs
PSU for above HDDs

Anyone done similar got any tips? Ive not really got a set budget, ive been looking at 5-6bay NAS jobbies for £600+ so hopefully i could build this for less than that. Im after suggestions on mobo, cpu, ram and case+psu.

Im thinking about either a huge full tower or Mountain Mods UFO cube, ill be hiding the tower away in a spare room so size, ugliness and noise wont be an issue. Thanks for any tips guys.

you can buy a NAS box and attach external drives to it via s-sata or usb so that's a option, i have a Synology box with a Drive connected via one of the USB ports for extra bits but i believe you can use a USB Hub and attach multiple drive if the 3 or 4 usb ports are not enough,
In terms of Spec you dont need brutal horse power to do this (depending what you want to do) do you not have any old hardware laying about you can donate ?
Also dont forget a "proper" Nas will only draw a couple of watts when on standby and be silent,

Get 1 of the HP micro servers which are on promo, and a e-sata enclosure

This seems a too good to be true offer... Ive found a local company ive never heard of selling these at £229 each, with the £100 cashback from HP. Ill ring them tomorrow and then nip down and buy a few if they have them in stock. :)

Unfortunately, since going Mac ive not got any old PC hardware i could build a rig with.

Using the same server HP MIcroserver with FREENAS for my backup and movies. Running 4 2tb Samsung hard drives in RAID 5, all seems to be ok.

Did have a the discs in RAID 1 but I ended up screwing it up and decided to go with RAID 5.
