I've been looking getting a NAS at some point soon as I want to share all media around my home. Prices seem extortionate to say the least, however I don't see why this can't be done from scratch myself? I've got plenty of old pcs that I'm sure could handle it. Main features I need are the ability to back up using mirrored drives ( RAID?) access media via the internet and obviously needs to be secure enough to hold my data. Would like to have 2 drives for the moment but if I can get 6 x 2tb somewhere down the line that would be cool.

Anyone know any good tutorials or build threads on here worth checking out? All advice on this appreciated!!:D

Oh, Merry Christmas OCUK!!!

Windows Home Server.

However, an old pc is fine, but not very power efficient. Balance that over the life of the server and a NAS would probably work out cheaper. I have an i3 PC with 2gb ram. Onbard everything and 5x1tb and 1x2tb drive. 7tb or redundant storage (so 3.5tb really!) I use v1 since launch day. Works rather well! V2 requires hardware RAID control, where the v1 uses drive extender technology. You can also backup local PCs nightly, and access data remotely using a domain name.

WHS does all that you specify!
