Ok, hopefully that got a few folks attention.

The Oculus is basically just a smallish LCD screen, a couple of lenses and some headtracking. The headtracking has been done in various ways by the flight-sim folks for ages (see opentrack, facetrack, facetrackNoir).

The Rift basically just bundles a screen in, the means to make it work so close to your face (refines it a LOT to get zero latency) and we have an entire device that's awesome.

So. There's a few guides around for making your own Rift. The best one seems to be "The Nova": http://www.instructables.com/id/The-NovaA-DIY-Oculus-Rift/

Most of them though are using a 1280x800 screen (same as the Rift Dev Kit 1). The current dev kit 2 rift uses a 1920x1080p screen. It's taken directly from a Samsung Galaxy S5 or Galaxy Note 3 (I forget which) but is the entire top part of the phone including digitizer and a hole for the home button.

So.... can anyone either suggest a model name for a fairly cheap 1920x1080p screen in the 5-7.5" range or the electronics that would be needed to drive a salvaged galaxy/note3 screen? It's about all that's holding it back from being in ballpark of a Rift DK2.

OcUK - there's probably a penny or 2 to be made in sourcing a screen and putting a kit up :p

Edit.
So reading around a bit more, the full plans for rift Dk1 are opensource (here) and there's a kickstarter up for a "riftup" kit to upgrade from Dk1 to Dk2 screens so someone's worked out the interface board needed.

The screen in the newest rift is from an LG Optimus G Pro E890 (it's a 2:1 aspect ratio screen so kinda perfect).

Ahhh: and here's the forums where they discussed stuff leading up to the rift being made http://www.mtbs3d.com/phpBB/viewforum.php?f=140 and a simple guide on making your own head tracking:
http://www.maximumpc.com/article/how-tos/how_build_your_own_ir_head_tracker?page=0,1

If we can just find a suitable screen somewhere... anyone? Have linked this up in "product suggestions" just in case OcUK could maybe source parts(?) (OcUK-less Rift) :D
