This is more aimed at those who have fabricated their own case/modded them but any ideas input etc is appreciated. Planning a dual 1366 build with a supermicro board which is a very odd proprietary form factor coming in at 12.8 inches by 16.5 inches. I could slash and hack an eatx/eeatx case but in the spirit of being a cheap f*cker I'm gonna build it myself. Here's a photo of the board for reference:

And here's 20 minutes of Sketchup work (note the mobo image is not accurate at all):

The sizing of the wood base on the first model is 14x18 and I'll put m3 standoffs into the wood to mount the board. The second is the same size, using 2x2 inch, 85mm high posts. This is based on the PSU also being 85mm high and I figure with the position of it that'll help to support the heatsinks. The orange space represents the HDD area; I'll be using 2 3.5 HDD's and 1 2.5 SSD so I'll most likely end up rigging a drive cage into there. For the last picture the two yellow spaces represent the cpus (roughly), red is power for the board, pink is IO and the bright green is SATA ports. The dark green area represents potential GPU area; it'll be odd to build a supporting post if I mount the gpu to the board plus there could be clearance issues so it's a toss up between a PCIE riser cable and mounting it flat or using a PCIE riser card and mounting it that way which is what I'm leaning towards. The card choice isn't 100% yet but it'll probably end up being some sort of 970. Other things to note is that I'll have to cut a hole in the bottom for PSU airflow and also be using rubber feet on the bottom.

The few questions I have are what sort of wood could I use for this; was thinking particle/mdf at first but they use epoxy/resin to bond the wood and the heat could weaken it, maybe plywood? I know that has a tendency to splinter but it's nothing sandpaper cant fix. Also, how would I go about painting this? Was thinking just a few coats of normal black Rustoleum spraypaint and a coat of clearcoat. Any ideas advice or input is appreciated.

yeah was confusing mdf with particle board haha. had some issues figuring out gpu placement; can't mount straight up as theres a capacitor where the pcie lock would go, a 2u riser would provide barely a mm of clearance over the motherboard, general space issues etc before i realised i could just lose the corner off the top, drop the card down with a pcie riser cable and cut out a 120x240mm hole on the bottom and have two fans to cool the card. that is assuming i end up with a full size 970 which is what i measured it all out for. a mini card would be a plus but nothings definite atm.

MDF is fine (my case is built from the same stuff). As far as painting is concerned, just use some wood filler to get a nice flat surface then use generic rattlecan spraypaint. Lots of light coats with a light sanding inbetween then finish with a clearcoat and some car polish (for that smooth, shiny look)

@RevBillyG Do you have any photos of said case? Interested in getting as much info/ideas as possible before I commit to anything. I think I'm going to opt for a carbon vinyl wrap, seems easier plus Deblows desk build looked pretty slick.

Would simply drilling a hole roughly similar to the size of an M3 standoff thread, coating the threads with say epoxy and sticking it in be the best option for a mobo tray? I get it's all simple stuff but I don't want to get down the line, have to remove the board for some reason or another and end up having the standoffs become loose in the board or something like that. Still looking forward to the project though as it's the first time I've done anything like this.

Great idea, with that I've realised I can put a 6 or 8mm standoff into a flush standoff on the board and use that to route cables underneath; I had been planning on just running them out the sides and over however with the cable management idea I've also opted to leave a 3mm lip around the outside where I can get some dark smoked clear perspex, cut it and slide it into place something like this (again not the best modelling work)

Still unsure as to what I'll do with the open space, I was thinking something like this:

Although I'll have to get 3.0 to 2.0 cables it's nice as it's plenty of ports, has power/reset switches and I can mount it flat.

@RevBillyG Just had a flick through, some quality work there - Renders looked great and the final product is even better; paint finish is gorgeous, looks almost plastic at first (light strip around the top is great too). Love the fan controller mount, thinking of something along those lines to mount flush in the spare space I have.

Still unsure as to if I want to vinyl wrap it or go with paint however I could also be reusing my old desk as the bases for this - doesn't really specify what material it is other that "wood effect" but it should do the job.

^^ Weird how things stick in your head, I remember reading that thread back then like it was yesterday. One day, when I grow up, I'd like to have a well stocked work shed and do some proper wood butchery
