I'm sure this has been asked on here before but I thought I would ask again. Basically I have just bought a new SSD drive for my MBP and finished getting all the software installed etc. I now want to organise my music collection so it is much better to view and find music etc, right now its looking like this

So as you can see it's a mess, just have a Trance folder with most of my music in there. As of recently have started to stick in folders by month but its a nightmare trying to put together a mix via genre etc.

I would organise by genre but in some cases its hard to determine if something is uplifting, tech, whatever. So looking for ideas on how other people manage their music?

Cheers

Used to have mine sorted by BPM but that was back in the dark ages when music come on black plastic 12" discs.

The best way is by label and cat no.

Right now mine is loosely organised in multiple ways and it's not very productive, but I know where stuff is well enough to work with it. I would like to commit completely to label/cat no. but haven't had the time to go crazy sorting it all out yet.

I have some in label/cat no, some by release date, some alphabetical, some based on artist which are all then grouped by genre.

My vinyl tends to end up being grouped into 'favourites' and 'meh' with the rest being in between.

Ideally I'd like: musicfolder\genre\label\catno - release artists - release title\music files

With the possibility of adding the release year to the end of the release folder.

The only real drawback of label/cat no is that it can make things feel a bit incomplete if you don't 'fill out' most of the labels releases too well (which is one of the reasons I haven't committed fully to it for many of my tracks).

I make up sub-genres and places tracks within them ordered by bpm.

So under trance I would have:

Proggy - eg, Juventa - Suedine and Andain - Promises (Soundprank)
Normal - eg. Ummet Ozcan - Miami Sundown and Space RockerZ - So Out Of Reach (Nitrous Oxide)
Techy - eg. Heatbeat - Roses Never Cry and Tritonal - Piercing Quiet
Banging - eg. Tritonal - Slave (Tritonal & Ben Gold Club Dub) and Sub Question - Heretic

I've just stuck mine into sub genre (jungle, 2-step, drumstep etc) then by month/year purchased. Can find stuff easy enough that way.

I've decided to go down the route of organising by genre so it's starting to look like this now

Ideally get rid of the Months and just categorise via genre

Are you rocking a Kontrol S2 DezUk? I love mine <3.

Are you using MixedInKey to get the key for each track? Harmonic mixing makes my head spin.

I'm also battling to work out how to organise my tunes, so I'll be watching this thread closely.

I prefer Rapid Evolution over Mixed In Key to get an idea of harmonics, though neither are by any means perfect.

Yep using the S2 and love it, did have the S4 but sold that and bought the S2 while it was on special offer. Also using MIK for getting the keys, going to spend some of today sorting out my collection!
