Depends. Some demos/experiences only work with certain versions and after a certain version extended mode stopped working. (either 0.6 or later if i recall) A lot of demos in the old days had poor performance in direct mode but very good performance in extended display mode. (not as hard as it sounds to get stuff working)

Id advise downloading a few versions and also the runtime switcher (which enables easy transition from different runtimes)
