DLNA over VPN possible?

I was just wondering if it's possible to stream content from my media server to my phone (over wifi) or to a friends house given a fast enough upload speed.
At the moment I don't have the upload speed to support it but when I go for Fibre very soon I was wondering if the upload speed on that would make it possible (I'm not talking HD here BTW, that doesn't even work steaming to my phone over the network!!!).

I have had a play around and set up a VPN which my phone, ipad, laptop etc can connect to no problem and when I run the DLNA app on my phone over the VPN from a remote location it finds the media (but can't play it due to rubbish upload speed of course) so would this be possible?

If it helps:
The VPN is PPTP running on Windows Server 2008 R2 and the media server is twonky media running on ubuntu server.

If it can find the media then it's working already. It's just a case of getting the throughput.
VPNs always add an overhead and reduce performance. PPTP isn't noted for being fast, least of all implemented on linux based hosts.

If you could rig up an IPSec or SSL VPN that would probably work better. SSL would be best as your phone will likely be more geared to using that for web browsing and secure connections for apps.

Type of vpn should be irrelevant from the objectives view point as a vpn is simply a pipe from device a to device b.

Most phones don't support open vpn (SSL) however it's the most tolerant to iffy connections which can happen in busy areas e.g. 3g at the uni library is so chocked it's useless. PPTP should in all honesty be fine for year needs. IPsec has similar fault tolerance to ssl and is built into windows - but it has more overhead than pptp and requires more ports (which are commonly blocked where pptp isn't).

Ah that's good news, will just have to hope the sky router supports VPN when I order fibre next week (and they increase the upload speed beyond 2mbs).
