DNO Pylons attached to diesel generator

They have been taking down the local DNO electricity pylons that ran across my new build estate as they were in the way of the build. Noticed this diesel generator attached today and it's been running all night so far, does this mean some peeps somewhere are having their homes powered by the generator? It's strange because the pylons stop in the next field across the road at this end and ended at the edge of my new estate at the other end. Also that transformer pole in the undergrowth has been attached to the diesel generator too with the cable just laid across the pavement.

IIRC it normally means that for whatever reason they've had to disconnect some properties from the grid, often if they're having to do works at a substation or they've had something like a pole mounted transformer die.

It's basically a short term effort to maintain power whilst something is fixed as they can have those portable generators on site and hooked up a lot faster than the time it might take to get some spares delivered and fitted.

If it's a new build have a look for a digger with scorch marks :p (we had some builder cut through the same high power underground line 3 times in 4 days a few years back, along the same few hundred meters).

It could also be they are running late to connect some of the new build properties up and this is their way of powering a small number, and avoiding any contractual fines for delaying it.

There’s a new Lidl near me that’s being powered by a diesel set. According to the manager, the council are dragging their heels with the electricity supply paperwork and he reckons it happens quite often .

Welcome to being in the military, barrack blocks and heating systems have been powered by diesel generators for years due to poor/aging infrastructure

Great fun when the diesel tanks arent checked and they run out on a weekend and it's a mass game of "Who's problem is it?".

those generators can power a whole street if not half an area, they use them during power cuts sometimes.

had one outside my place once for about a week when half the area lost power
