Can i use entanet DNS servers on my virgin media 20mbs cable service?
will it help my ping times and general browsing because the virgin DNS servers are a little slow at times.

OpenDNS.

/thread ;)

I don't actually know whether access to Enta's DNS servers is restricted by IP (i.e. customers only) but OpenDNS is great anyway, and will provide a massive difference to many on VM cable. Try a forum search for other threads on this. BTW no, it won't help your ping - that's nothing to do with DNS per se.

OpenDNS are overrated. They're pretty good if your ISP's DNS servers are awful but if you can get access to a half-decent DNS server elsewhere, go for it.

As said, it'll make no difference to your ping but browsing could well be quicker. I personally find VM's DNS servers to be pretty good (compared to last time I had them, about 3-4 years ago).

i have tried opedns and didn't find it any good so i tried be* dns a little better and as soon as i tried entas dns things where a lot better.

Also noticed that since changing my DNS my speeds seem to be a little faster even in speed tests.

Your DNS server will not have any impact on sustainable transfer speeds.

Certainly can improve the resolution and initial loading times of web pages but once a domain has been resolved to an IP it does nothing more with respect to transfer.
