DNS updates 24 hours+

I have a number of websites and often move them around between hosts for various reasons.

Sometimes after I've updated name servers and added the domain on the new host it will still take a good 24+ hours for my ISP to go to the new web host. otherwise it keeps trying to fetch from old nameserver records.

I have changed the DNS on my router to point to openDNS. However the router is behind the openreach modem and I wonder if openreach modem has it's own DNS setting.

My question is 2 fold.

1) Does the openreach modem overwrite any DNS preferences on the router connected to it.

2) How do I connect to the openreach modem to make changes without having to physically connect to the modem via ethernet.

1) Not that I know of

2) Which OR VDSL modem is it? ECI or Huawei? Huawei's can be unlocked to enable the 2nd Ethernet port, not sure if they can be done on the ECI.

A better idea would be to reduce the TTL records on the DNS records for the ones you often change, so you can't control if some DNS caches will ignore the TTL.

hmm.

I can't work out what model the openreach device is because it's screwed onto the wall behind a cupboard.

I think the problem may be down to namecheap not "pushing" out the propogation on their end and also the web host to catching the domain and allocating it to the hosting correctly.

I have looked up the website on the phone network and tried a few proxies. I get the same issues.

How quickly do you expect DNS changes to fully propagate? 24+ hours doesn't seem unreasonable. It's often much faster, but it can take a while.

Stop worrying about the OR modem, it isn't going to be your problem.
