Hey Peeps,

Do all subaru's explode?

A subaru is a car i would like to consider in a couple of years time maybe, but i keep hearing of them neediing engine rebuilds every 10k miles, and the fact that will gill's exploded. Makes me ask, do they all explode? or was it jst a certain model etc that needs an engine rebuild?

Cheers :)

Er, no..

The P1 had a flaw which meant the engine failed around 60k miles iirc, this was only a problem on the P1. Will's was rebuilt before he got it with a stronger engine. The only other possible engine problems I'm aware of is number 3 piston sometimes fails, but its only really a problem on tuned cars.

If they're looked after, they'll run for ages, they are japanese after all..

That the same Japanese who built the 7MGE and 7MGTE Toyota engines that went in the Mk3 Supra with their infamous head gasket problem? The specified torque for the head bolts from the factory was around 25 to 30 lbs-ft lower than it needed to be, so they tended to fail. Don't think Toyota ever admitted it, but they certainly changed the torque specification after it was discovered!

quite, the Japenese stuff is far from infallable. For example the CA18 which likes to lunch big end bearings, the VG30 which likes to overheat the rear 2 cylinders. In fact thats all I know off the top of my head. The non-performance stuff does seem quite infallable though tbh.

Subarus are bullet proof on the whole, if you mess with them then you are obviously pushing them outside of their "comfort zone" , most of the problems I've had with mine are silly little things (dump vale gasket, leaking clutch slave etc..) on the whole I love subaru ownership and the fact I can pretty much strip the entire engine and associated ancilleries makes me much more confident should a problem arise. Mine didnt blow up either it was just a loose hose which gave exactly the same symptons as a big end failure (phew!)

suck em and see :)

We have a Subaru that is 15 or 16 years old and it done 230,000kms and it gets ragged daily.
Its been Flogged down dirt roads, My sister has crashed it into a tree twice, ive hit a tree once, Its been launched over Train tracks and up through dips to get airborne, Driven through water deep enough to cover the bonnet. It gets driven red lined every gear change.

Its still works fine and hasnt blown up :p :D
It just has an over heating problem due to something with the Radiator i think.

And yes it is a boxer engine

Yes they all blow up, in fact i've never actually seen a working Subaru on the road

Honestly what a daft question. They are no more unreliable than any other car. If you base your opinions from those on the internet there is a far higher likelyhood of reading about peoples troubles because people on the internet are enthusiasts who tune their cars and also pass on the information their mates said

The reality of the matter is there are going to be thousands that are no trouble whatsoever. A guy I know at work has had his 280bhp import for 6 years and despite tens of thousands of miles of motoring it's been the most reliable car he's ever owned.

My UK classic Scoob was running a dyno 'proven' 346 bhp, on standard internals, with well over 100k on them. I drove it like I stole it, daily. It lived in the redline. It never missed a beat the whole time I owned it.

They are VERY reliable cars, but only if treated and tuned PROPERLY.

If you listen, really closely, hold your breath, you can hear them exploding on the wind....

Anyone else noticed the one on the AA advert that explodes with lots of sparks? :D

Why daft?, i see working subarus every week as does everyone else, but the question was asking, do they all need engine rebuilds every XXX amount of miles? so on and so forth

It was a totaly daft question. Do all Evo's explode? Do all Civics explode?

Firstly non of them explode. Some of them may suffer engine failures, especialy highly tuned ones.

My dads boss had a classic Impreza with well over 200k miles on the clock on the original engine and turbo, and he used to thrash the nuts of it everyday. Engine was stock apart from mild boost increase.

Now your just being daft

It was a simple question, which required and recieved a simple bloody answer. I swear what is it with people in motors?. I remember the thread when will's got his (awsome car btw :D) and he confirmed it had already been rebuilt, then later i briefly looked at the thread where he thought the engine had gone (didn't realise it was just a hose). Yes its been confirmed that they are very reliable etc. Heard of will's one being rebuilt, and on other forums people seem to give off some form of indication that the engines need regular high maintenance, so i asked if this was true out of plain curiosity and general interest, and got the answer that only if not treated properly and haven't been tuned properly.

Yeesh

Ya think so many people would buy them if they did? ;)

Will's isn't exactly your average Subaru, the P1 is based on a japanese car, and alledgedly wasn't mapped right to account for UK fuel. it was only a problem on the P1.

Garbage in - Garbage Out. Ask a stupid question and be prepared for a stupid reply. Not just this forum, that's life, get used to it.

You asked if they "all explode", which is a stupid question.

Yes, all Subarus explode*

My Subaru has exploded 17times in the 8 Weeks I have had it! I am tempted to speak to the dealer about this what do you lot reckon?

* May not be true, but I like humouring people who ask silly questions.
Perhaps the better question to ask would be "Do all Impreza P1s explode?"
A little personal research would go a long way from asking silly questions
