Do AMD x2 processors generate *any* heat? :-)

I'm still setting up XP, so I'm running this x2 3800/Freezer Pro at stock speed. The heat sink isn't warm, the heatpipes in it aren't warm, and I can touch the side of the CPU package and that's not warm either.

Either there's a little pocket of superheated plasma building up down there in an accidental insulating vacuum, or these things generate almost as much heat as a *********. There's no wonder this generation of chips overclock so well!

I'm only on an Asrock board, so 3GHz isn't on the cards. Neither's anything else until I've tested it thoroughly at 2GHz. But it won't stay there, that's for sure. If it won't at least match the 2.4GHz on the mobile Barton box it's replacing there'll be tears, because whatever folk say about improved memory controllers, better pipelining etc, MHz is still what matters most.

A efficient heatsink will be warm/hot as it is an indication of how well it can take away the heat from the CPU so a cold heatsink can also indicate the contact isn't optimal.

As I said originally, it did originally make me wonder if there was something wrong. It turns out the only thing wrong was that the CPU was twiddling its thumbs... all 4 of them.

Sadly Wayne, despite the Mc I'm more your "spare security guard in the landing team" kinda guy. And I've definitely never been in a position to say "she canna tek ennimower!"

Maybe I should trying dating shorter women?

Oh, and Dutch, thanks for reminding me about Cool & Quiet. I noticed it in the BIOS just now and have turned it off. Despite all the reading I did before this purchase, as soon as the parts arrived I seem to have forgotten everything! :-)
