hey guys,
So I'm a 17 year old looking to make some money on top of my saturday job, and I was thinking about whether it would be viable to sell computers on ebay. has anyone got any experience doing this?
I could buy a pre built barebones from overclockers, whack in some of the new really cheap OCZ ram, decent hardrive, network card, dvd drive and a cheap amd athlon II and then put it up on ebay at maybe £150 markup.

Any thoughts, comments or advise on this? I've only ever purchased things on ebay, never sold before, so I don't know much about the selling structure either, so any info on how it works, what kind of fees i would have to pay etc would be great as well.

Cheers guys!
Dan

I looked into this:

1) You wont be able to compete with the companies that have trade accounts unless you want to make no money at all
2) You need to make yourself stand out, 99% of the system builders on ebay do the same as you, buy the cheapest crap they can find and flood ebay with it so the people who can put quality computers together usually get ignored because they are priced out of the competition.

well ebay charge 10%, and then paypal take about 3% and then you gotta post and what about warranty issues?, too much of a head ache if you ask me
you would be better getting a little interest from family and friends and see how it goes

EBay take too much, that's why it hasn't been done before, and yes u will be flooded with warranty issues from buyers, besides pre built from retailers are probably cheaper cause they can bulk buy

I don't think thats as easy as it used to be to be honest.

Price it up and look at the competition

+1
It can be a total waste of time these days...Too many jerks on the bay. I tried so far with 3 PCs in the past month...Also tried breaking them into parts... only getting ridiculous offers, not to mention insertion fees etc. But may be that's me...You may want to try and see for yourself. Who knows, you might get lucky;)

It's %10 isn't it?

Insertion fees
Final valuation feed
Pay pal fees
And any extra 'features' generally add up to around 20%

The only thing eBay seems reasonable on is car sales, last time I looked it was a very reasonable amount, less than a worse advert in autotrader for example.

get a Sunday job to go with your Saturday job :)

selling pc's on e-bay is a pain as others have said.

Never! I already want to kill myself after an 8 hour shift at MnS, appalling employers. I've made a vow that after I leave school I am NEVER working in retail again. Not to mention that most sunday's I'm hungover and don't get out of bed until midday :p

I'm not that desperate for money, I just thought it might be a fun way to earn a bit of extra cash. I might give it ago building something for about £200-£250 just to see how it goes. Even if I'm only making £50 net profit or something, I'd be happy.

I'm also at a slight advantage because I live in the channel Islands I can get all the parts VAT free.

Tried it, don't bother honestly.

People on the bay want something for nothing. Then when you finally sell one it'll happen to be to the most UN-tech savvy person ever, who somehow thinks a 7300GS would play WOW acceptably.

Yet i guess you can't blame them considering the volume of "gaming computers" on there with an 8400GS inside them.

God i hate that place.

just bought a PC of ebay from a fella who was moving, best thing i ever bought, and he got totally ripped off. Not my fault i just put in the starting bid and no one else bid on it so i suppouse he had to give it too me, but damn it should have went for more, to be honest i spent quite some time on ebay looking for pcs and i didnt see many small timers listing computers so i dont think you have much of a chance

What about Micromart? Isn t it free to advertise in there?

That eliminates the fees, and I think it can be done online too.

Just needs postage etc.

Don't take my word for it

But I'd hazard a guess that most of the bigger computer retailers on the bay have wholesale items stored somewhere. They'll be paying less for the same parts you'd be buying, therefore you'd be at an instant disadvantage as they can drop the price of a rig lower than you could.

Don't do it.
