I have a BT engineer booked to come out today but their phone service states they have the day off with it being a bank holiday.

So do the BT engineers still work? They booked the time but I don't want to wait in all day to find out they aren't coming.

Anyone confirm?

Thanks

Doubtful, did you not question it when you booked it? Not only is it new years day, a bank holiday but also saturday

Didn't think about it being new years day but did question the saturady. I was told by three different people that they would come out saturday but forgot it was new years day.

Depends what type of job it is, some BT eng are contracted out and will work new years etc.

It's to repair a fault. According to the BT forum they do work. Guess I will be waiting in all day then. I still doubt they will show. Hopefully I will be pleasantly surprised.

The bank holiday's on Monday. Today's just Saturday with a bigger hangover.

If they said they'd come, they'll probably come.

Ask to see his degree. When he says he doesn't have one ask why he calls himself an engineer.

My housemate did that a couple of years ago (he's a mechanical engineer grad) to a British Gas engineer. He came round to fix our boiler, and my mate asked his what his degree was, and gave him grief of using the title 'Engineer'. Was actually really rude.

Well the engineer came and fixed the fault. Just hope I don't get charged as they promised I wouldn't when dealing with the network people.

The line even syncronises a tiny bit faster now too. Happy New Year to BT and all those that replied today!

Your mate doesnt sound very intelligent for someone with a degree either. Insulting someone who is `fixing` your gas boiler.

"Yeah just give it 5 minutes and then light it up mate..."

I would argue that if engineers had more status in this country then we wouldn't be in the mess we're in. For some reason our brightest school pupils are attracted to medicine, law and investment banking - I would argue that none of these really contribute to the growth of the economy. If our brightest minds were innovating new technologies, developing products and services in aerospace, transport, energy etc and exporting these developments then we'd be a lot better off than we are with the bankers sucking up all the wealth.
A big part of this problem is allowing people who fix washing machines to call themselves engineers.

According to Google

engineer - a person who uses scientific knowledge to solve practical problems

So i suppose it depends what you call scientific knowledge. I would arguing knowing how a washing machine works and being able to fix it, is not the same as knowing why the washing machine works.

Sounds like a lovely house mate you have. Did he not think that maybe the poor guy just trying to do his job didn't pick his job title so giving him grief was not only rude but pointless and misdirected.

You can give 'Engineers' all the grief you want but you'll find it's just the job title given to them by their respective employers. I'm a NOC Engineer, I don't have a degree but if you want to give me hassle about my job title, I'll tell you where to get off. Take it up with the employers, don't be a dick to a bloke that comes out and fixes things for you.
