Simple question really, Do you think developers put as much effort into soundtracks these days as they did a few years ago. The reason i ask is that i was listening to a few songs on youtube from certain games that are instantly recognisable. But looking through my cataloge of 360 and ps3 games i can't say i can remember one song from any.

Some examples;

Bear in mind i'm not talking about stuff like grand theft auto where they license music. I mean going out on thier own and producing something memorable and actually quite good.

I was just listening to the Bayonetta soundtrack and I think developers if anything put more effort into the soundtrack.

It's a very original composition mixing pop music with jazz fusion - it's very similar to the Marvel vs Capcom 2 soundtrack; it's brilliant.

I find however that a lot of American games opt for incredibly generic orchestrated soundtracks. Hans Zimmer did a pretty good job with MW2 - probably the only thing I liked about the game.

I can see where you're coming from, but I think there is the same amount of quality soundtracks, its just theres more games so they dont stand out more. Modern warfare 2's soundtrack was done by Hans zimmer, which is good. Last generation gave us the awesome Halo music and Amin Tobins soundtrack for chaos theory which suited the game perfectly. Mass Effect and Oblivion have good soundtracks in my opinion also.

some games on psn like shatter and mavity crash have some awesome music - not sure i'd class them as 'memorable' though..

lol for some reason the first bit of music that popped into my head was that track from the end of Gears, COLE TRAIN BABY!

It really just depends on the game and the developer.

I tend to find that when it comes to Japanese developed games, they have a lot more memorable and catchy tunes, simply because most of them keep to a style that matches with the videogame in question. The musical styles range from all sorts of different genres in original ways or mixed together to create something entirely new. I find that it's music that is "Videogame Music".

With Western developed games, it's more Orchestra and generally there to be background noise or filler or trying too much to be Hollywood movie-like. Though there are a few exceptions though, like someone mentioned before, the music in Halo is pretty memorable, but that is mainly because of it's theme tune. The first Unreal Tournament game is one that really like as well simply because each tune matches well with their respective maps.

That is the most embarrassing boss theme I've ever heard (also I love Blue Dragon otherwise, it's just that theme!). It just doesn't live up to the normal battle theme, or any of the rest of the soundtrack, just due to the hilariously awful vocals.

That what makes the soundtrack memorable because of the hilariously awful vocals:p Same for Bayonetta when you get into a fight but its starting to get irritating after a few hours of hearing it.
The Marvel vs Capcom 2 soundtrack up there with Street Fighter 3, I dont think Capcom put as much effect into their music anymore though.

The Hitman games have all had excellent soundtracks. Jesper Kyd isn't afraid to push the boundaries and do things that seem like they wouldn't 'fit', but actually work very well in-game.

This , in the last few levels of Halo 3 the music was amazing and made you feel epic.

the mjolnir mix from halo 2 has to be the best one:

best part of halo 2 was scooting round New Mombasa in a warthog with 3 mates with this blearing out in the background, so epic!

'on a pale horse' is a pretty good track as well:

banshees on two betrayals

and finally, possibly my favourite track from a game:

epic
