I'm about to start assembling my first custom loop and i'm trying to decide whether or not i should get a filter/strainer fitting.

Do they restrict flow enough to make a difference to temps?

Never used one, never seen the need. Why do you want one? If you flush the loop properly first and use clean fluids there is no need for a filter.

It's going to affect flow, if it didn't it'd be a worthless filter.

As to whether it will affect temps will depend on many factors, mainly your loop configuration and rad sizes and / or whether you are willing to run faster (noisier) pump speeds.

I don't see the need if you are properly flushing your components and keeping the loop sealed.
