Do HDMI switches detect as sinks?

I need an HDMI switch, but I can't find information either way as to if it'll do what I want it to do.

When an input isn't active on an HDMI switch do they normally totally disconnect the source? One of my sources is an Mac mini that is also connected to another sink via DisplayPort. When the switch input is set to !Mac I need the Mac to not know that there is anything on it HDMI port so that it switches back to single monitor mode.

How do switches normally handle this, or do I need a KVM or other more expensive device?

I don't want the mac to detect a display on its HDMI port when another source is using the monitor. The monitor won't be off, just in use by another source. I will be manually switching it rather than auto as the sources will all always be on. This is replacing me manually unplugging and swapping cables around.
