Do I chance it again?

Couple weeks back got a OCUK Value GTX 260, but for the couple of hours it lasted before dying, it was barely faster than my current 4850 and slower in the one game I wanted it to improve - Crysis.

So am still with my 4850, and still playing with the idea of an upgrade, but still looking at the GTX 260. As I said, it died within a couple of hours, so it may have been a duff card, but am worried about getting another and finding performance lacking compared to my 4850.

Otherwise I suppose I could just get a 4890, but didn't really want to go much beyond £150. And I don't think a 4870 is enough of a jump over the 4850 (think Crysis).

So should I chance another GTX 260, or just plump for a 4890? From all the reviews I have seen the 4890 when OCed should be about 50% quicker than the 4850... is that about right?

If I had a 4850 I personally wouldn't bother upgrading to a 260. It seems like a very small performance increase for quite a lot of money.

Perhaps just wait till the next round of graphics cards?

Its quite possible that the 260 wasnt faster than the 4850 because it was pretty much dead/dying on arrival i guess.

i wouldnt bother upgrading for crysis, it pretty much strugles on any setup, and whats playable on your 4850 will still be playable at the same settings on the 260, the difference is not noticable, a 4890 would be an improvement but still not that big. what resolution you gaming at

Maybe you guys are right. The settings wouldn't change very much....

Game at 1920x1200... and really it would be simply for Crysis. Sigh. Guess will just leave it.

The performance difference is massive between a 4850 and a GTX260 - 216 even with crysis.

Look here:

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17992567&highlight=crysis+benchmark

A 5.52 fps increase in crysis or 30%

And the GTX260 overclock superbly as well.

I went from a 4870 to a GTX260-216 and the difference was very noticable.

In that crysis benchmark with my GTX260 overclocked I now get 32 fps so over a 77% gain on a stock 4850 card.

And in everything else the GTX260 will crush the 4850 in performance.

Of course all this assumes your not running at 1024 x 768 and cpu limited?

I dunno how you're achieving your results but a GTX-216 will batter a 4850 especially at that resolution.

I wouldn't update just for the sake of one game but I certainly would (and have) updated for the host of other games that run far, far better on the 192 core 260 (never mind the 216) than even a 1GB 4870. Also gaming at 1920.

I got an OCuk 260GTX 55nm (actual card is a Sparkle) to add to my BFG to get 260 SLI and so far the card seems really good, overclocks better than my BFG MAXCORE OC, runs slightly cooler even (and my BFG runs very cool). Performance wise I can't fault it.
