i thinking about upgrading from 1680*1050 to 1920*1080 with a new monitor, the pixel difference 170^2. i currently have 2*HD 4870 512 mb in crossfire.

at the moment, i don't have any problems playing any games at pretty high settings i.e. BC 2 and MOH (frost bite engine) i run highest settings with 4 AA and 16 AF and vsync. i would happily reduce my AA to 2 for the bigger resolution.

and after seeing the ati's new 6000 series, i have absolutely no reason to upgrade my gpu's anytime soon.

most games at 1080 with 4xAA use around 700-800mb of memory unless there console parts which tend to be around 600mb.

the odd AAA pc title will use around 900mb so you might be a bit crippled in some games

i only have 500 mb vram?

and surveyor, what issues?

well i would able to get the HD 4870X2 if i sold my HD 4870's for the same price. Does anyone know if they still microstutter?

The new high end ati cards have not been released, only the mid range. I would have thought it would be better to sell your cards and either pickup a 6950 or maybe a 5870 2nd hand?

That way you get a dx11 card as well.

The issues I do have are mainly to do with crossfire which still occasionally seems to bugger things up. Also as there is only 512MB of VRAM some settings, like AA, have to be turned down sometimes.

These cards are 2 years old now!

thanks for the help guys. i've done some research and it suggests the microstuttering has been fixed so i'll sell my Hd 4870 and get a HD 4870X2.

to Puppetmaster: well yeah but the 4870X2=5870 but is half the price. i can't justify dx 11 yet.

Most games that require +512MB VRAM at 1920x1200 were recently released. You will not notice any performance hit going from 1050p to 1080p.
