This may seem a silly question to you experienced builders out there but I would really like to avoid a reinstall if possible, i did a search but couldn't find the answer so sorry if this is a much repeated question.

My puter died a few days ago looks like a cpu problem so time to change, previously had an AMD 64 chip and board but going to upgrade with an intel 8400 wolfdale and Abit p35 pro board, and as the thread says will I need to reinstall Vista 32 which is my own oem copy, which I bought seperately from the puter or can I do a repair? TBH reinstalling vista isn't the big issue it's all the other programmes that I would have to reinstall and all the file transfering was hoping by keeping my original vista HD I wouldn't have to do all the above.

Thanks in advance,

Martin

An Intel processor won't fit on an AMD based motherboard as you have an AMD Processor, so you will also need a new motherboard, in which case to remain legally licensed you will need to purchase a new OEM Copy of Vista which needs a reinstall.

Wait for confirmation on this.

OEM is tied to one motherboard. You may change any other component except the motherboard and be legally licensed, if you want to changed motherboards then you can either purchase another OEM Copy for that motherboard, or get the retail version where you may change any component, including the motherboard and be legally licensed.

OEM copy is tied to the motherboard. But if mobo died or is the problem then they'll agree to reactivate (through phone) ;)

Since changing chipsets, highly recommended you do a clean reinstall. You can back-up documents, etc using this :)

surely you don't need acronis for backing up documents, 7zip or simple file copy would suffice!

I think you will need to purchase a new OEM software, if you RMA your current motherboard and you got a different one back ie your motherboard had been superseeded then you can safely get reactivated.
As your buying a new setup I beleive this will require a new license.

Burnsy or firewizard are very clued up regards this.

Thanks for the feedback guys,
OK so it looks like a clean install is the only way forward, I will speak to MS see if they will let me migrate the license, fingers crossed.
On the Arcronis side, will this let me back up my old C drive if I connect it to another computer and treat it as an external drive so I can get all my saved games, emails etc from the old C drive?

You've got a bit more substance than most if your motherboard died, but unless it was a replacement through the supplier or manufacturer under warranty, you won't be licensed.
