Do i have to subscribe to podcasts on my main itunes?

I listen to a lot of podcasts and do so entirely through the podcasts app on my phone. I don't sync my phone and pc all that often (maybe every couple of weeks), and all that ends up happening is that my pc puts on a load of old podcasts that i've already listened to on my phone and it's a pain having to manage something that should just work automatically.

So, if i tell my computer to stop syncing podcasts to my iphone is it going to cause some kind of explosion, or can i just deal with them through my phone as i'd like to?
