Do i have to use iTunes?

You should try Itunes, I didnt like it but when I got an ipod I thought I would give it ago and its great

I uses Winamp for my iPod too. I get rid of the default portable music player plugin and get the proper ml_ipod plugin. Don't care that Apple don't like this.;)
 
I use Anapod Explorer on my PC but to be honest I-Tunes does exactly the same job.
Make sure you untick the syncing functions so everything doesn't get messy unless you know what you're doing.
You'll find that you can drag and drop like all the alternative programs and you don't have to mess with playlists.
I have two teenage daughters who learnt how to use I-Tunes in 5 minutes and its simple drag and drop.

However, and this is important, you must learn to TAG your MP3's or else they will go everywhere on your IPOD.
I-Tunes has got its own TAGGING software - (from memory) you drag and drop onto the IPOD, select all the tracks after they are on the IPOD, right click and click on Get Info. Straightforward from there.

I always TAG my MP3's before I put them on the IPOD and I use a free program called ID3-Tagit.
 
Thankyou kindly. I am more used to dragging and dropping files and i have used iTunes. I just found it wrecked havoc with my music files, creating new folders etc so i uninstalled it. I do have WMP 11 however and i'm starting
to like it. :o (Note, not prefer it to iTunes, just like it).

The new folders are because you haven't tagged your files and this will happen in any alternative to I-Tunes.
IPOD's work on the tagging information and not the directories that they're in.
It is a pain the ass sometimes but once you get used to tagging you'll find that you can have more choice how you choose what music you listen to.
 
Let me explain the problem of 'new directories' appearing with a screen grab.
In the picture below I have made a directory called My Fave Tracks.
In that directory are three tracks by Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin and Steve Vai.
On some MP3 players you could drag that directory in and you will see the name of that directory and the three tracks inside it.
However, on an IPOD (and others inc RIO) the information that will be read is the tagging info to the right of each track which is the ARTIST name and the ALBUM name.
Therefore in the example below if you drag the My Fave Tracks directory into your IPOD, you will get three Artists name come up, with an album name in each one and one track in each one.
To make all the tracks go into the same place you would have to multiple tag the 3 tracks and call them eg ARTIST = Dave . ALBUM = My Fave Tracks.
It sounds confusing but once you master it you can do it in seconds.

Think i get that. Just annoying as i seemed to have lost music also. I added songs to the Library and then when i clicked to play it, it couldn't find the song. So off i went to help it find the song to find it's not there or something. I swear i lost music because of this.

Hm, so would it be wise to simply let iTunes do it's thing or change the way i group my music etc? Currently i have a folder named with the Artist, then a sub directory in the folder with each album name.

1 - turn the sync functions off because they can cause more trouble than its worth.

2 - I presume you are talking about the folders on your PC?
As I posted before, it makes no difference how you have structured songs on your PC's hard drive. YOU MUST tag the tracks in each directory on your PC.
Another screen grab to show how simple it is to do a Multiple Tag.
I-Tunes will also do this and you also have the advantage of a volume control so that you can get past the EU Volume regulations.

When you installed iTunes you left the option for it to automatically move your files and folders. Reinstall iTunes and make sure to untick it ;)
