As above
have a new graphic card rx 5700xt pulse currently hooked up to a dell monitor which has a res of 2560x1440 but only has a 60hz refresh rate.
i am looking to move upto a 27" 144mz monitor but am curious do i really need to stay with 2560x1440 res, would there be much difference if i went down to 1080p

currently my budget and space limitations (custom made desk) i have narrowed things down to 1 of these 3 panels

msi mpg27cq 27" 144mhz
dell s2719dgf 27" 144mhz

hence my question about 1080p

thanks

oh another quick question with the above card would you be linking to a monitor via dp or hdmi?

I would definitely upgrade to a 144hz monitor the difference from 60hz is insane.

1080p will obviously give you even more of a framerate boost which may be the right choice with your current hardware especially if you are aiming for over 100fps .

VA isn't THAT bad lol
it isn't that bad if you can peg the fps at 100+
once fps drops to 75 and below it turns into a blurry mess due to ghosting inherent to all VA panels, even with freesync is enabled on most VA panels

the msi screen tries to fix this flaw by using backlight strobing, but once this mode is enabled, the panel isn't as bright (as half the time, the backlight is off essentially), and freesync = off

I got one of the msi 144hz coming and want to run at max refresh is it still good enough? I usually turn brightness down to 50 on ips monitors anyways.

@EssexBoy
i doubt you'll need strobing if you can peg your fps at 100+

in my experience VA ghosting is worst when the fps drops. noticeable at 75hz/fps and terrible at sub-60hz/fps
especially with high contrast transitions (ie white->black)

i can't really say if backlight strobing helps though, never used a VA panel with one.
(but i assume it should, in theory because it (a) makes the screen darker, (b) the pulsing light should help hide the ghosting/smearing)

I made the switch from 24" 1080p @ 60Hz/5ms, to a 28" 4K @60Hz/5ms, to a 27" 2K @ 144Hz/1ms and although it lacks some fine details that the 4k screen gave, the motion when you turn or scroll etc is noticeably more fluid, very happy with the end result. It's a TN panel but I don't find that an issue personally, as I find IPS screens too bright for long periods of use.

Yes, its 100% worth it. The difference between 1080p and 1440p is amazing and I wouldn't go back now. The only draw back is the card having to power a different resolution, but the 5700XT is more than capable.

I have the Dell SG model and cannot fault it. While it might be a TN panel, the colours aren't my primary concern.

a 27" at 1080p is good for your eyes and pc but that about it..... I have a ultrawide 49" 3840x1080p (basically the same screen size hightwise as my 27" I had before) and yeah its very nice on the eyes but you can just about see the pixels. I do too much reading on my pc to have a high resolution screen without wrecking my eyes. and before you say "change the scaling in windows", I dont like doing that as it makes things look rubbish.
