DO I NEED A COOLER CHANGE?

ok, so I bought an intel q6700 cpu without a heatsink and fan.

i then bought a heatsink and fan recommended by an online computer store - this one...1u Dynatron P199 S775 Quad Core Active Copper Heatsink for Q6700/Q6600 even Extreme X6800 !!

so then im told on a forum that the heatsink and fan wont suffice. This is what was said:

"That heatsink is a 1u cooler designed for slim server cases, I'd hazard a guess that with so little metal the fan will sound something like Concorde. It might not even work very well in a normal desktop case.
I'd have a nice word with **** and ask them to swap the cooler for something along the lines of:
*INTEL* Ultra 120 eXtreme - Thermalright Ultra 120 eXtreme 120mm Heat Sink Fan for Intel CPU (Without Fan) - No Competitors!) and a decent (Scythe or Noctua) 120mm fan"

I have an antec 300 case
What i want to know is:

1 - is a heatsink the same as a cooler?
2 - do i need to do what this guy is saying and replace the dynatron heatsink with a new cooler and fan?

think i can answer those
1: heatsink is a big metal thing to move the heat away from the component some have fans to get the heat of themselves
2. have you put the system together/used the fan? if not id change it but if you have are you having any problems? if not it may be fine!

and to answer your original question- YES I THINK YOU DO. DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT DYNATRON IS, BUT I'M GUESSING IT's NOT VERY GOOD, GET THE TRUE. WHY ARE WE SHOUTING?

i havent put it together yet - just bought a gtx 260 and still have a MOBO,RAM and other smaller bits to buy before i do put it together....

....i just want to make sure im not putting something together that will cause any damage to the system im building

I would do exactly what he said and see if you can get it swapped for the thermalright, although you might want to take that link down - it's against the rules (even though I can't get on it).

I'd assume it will work, but you would be much better off doing what he said. I don't know what he means by it sounding like a concorde, amount of metal has nothing to do with that, although it might be easier to tell if I could look at it.

A heatsink is essentially just part of a cooler. A heatsink basically removes heat from the chip, and dissipates it into the air. A fan improves airflow through the heatsink, which helps cool it even better. A heatsink and fan combined are usually known as a HSF (Heat Sink and Fan) or just a cooler.

Edit: After looking at it I can safely say YES, you should get a different cooler. I see what that other guy meant about the lack of metal, although I don't see why this would make it loud, the lack of fins definitely does reduce the cooling power. You should be looking for something that's made up similar to this:

Obviously you want to make sure it has a fan, or that you buy a fan for it, but those are examples.

whoops - ive removed the link - didnt realise there were rules sorry - it seems the general concensus is that ive bought a shi** HSF & that i need to replace it as advised by this guy even if the whole 'metal&concord' thing isnt relevant/correct....

I wouldn't use your original fan to cool my ...erm. It "looks" pretty useless to be honest. Awesome for an undervolted chip in a small case, but not for your purposes at all.

I bet that's even worse than the stock Intel HSF.

Id go with the thermalright ultra extreme, nothing beats it on a quad core, coupled with a noctua fan itll be a great combo.

Yes. Although it will probably still work, I wouldn't recommend it.

Here's a list of Frostytech's top 10 heatsinks for cooling (all are compatible with your motherboard - socket 775). Note that if it doesn't have a fan, you will have to buy one for it.

ive seen your edit mate - id just like to say thanks to all your posts everyone and for your assistance with the 'competitor' thing - im just new sorry!

i will be trying to get a replacement from tomorrow and looking at the thermalright cooler and noctua fan as thats the second recommendation ive had

I'd second that one. You can't really go wrong with it. Not the cheapest solution, but a very good one. The only reason the Thermalright 120 isn't that high on frostytech's list is because they used a crap fan.

Gotta agree, every reveiw ive seen of the TRUE they stick some basic fan on it, ive used the black version with 2 fans (2x2000 rpm run of a fan controller) and my temps at 3.8ghz, 1.512 vcore never go above 70c.

nothing comes close to a TRUE in Push/Pull on a quad.... end of story... the frosty tech review of it was rubbish... its a performance not a passive heatsink.. treat it like one

Very true pneumonic, im actually considering a few deltas to see if i can eek any more out of this quad, dont think my sharkoons would be adequate
