Do I need a GPU upgrade?

Hey guys,

I just went old-skool and bought Far Cry 4 for the PC, just finished playing it for an hour..but my question is, where am I losing performance..

I was playing at Medium / High detail at 1440p and averaging around 90-120 fps..

My GPU (3070ti) was peaking 61c and averaging mid 50's, and my CPU (5900X) was peaking at 71c and averaging mid 60's..

Is that reasonable for that game, because it is an older title...I mean it ran nicely, very well infact, I just dont know if I need a stronger GPU mabye? And I do need to factor in there is no DLSS etc in that title..

If anyone needs for specs, please let me know...

I think when you’re 90+ stable you’re good to go. Sounds good! More is always ‘better’ and but diminishing returns above that. If anything, you might notice a downgrade if you’re regularly running games much higher but it’s not ‘bad’.

Yeah, I just assumed that being an older title, that it would run higher..but again i suppose optimisation and no DLSS etc… need to be considered.

But yeah, it ran real smooth, so can’t complain mate.

What is your GPU usage whilst playing? Is it 100% or close to?

Temps are fine.

Do you have dual channel memory? Is it set to run at the correct speed?

I very highly doubt you need to upgrade anything to be honest. Not all games scale perfectly with FPS and there can be engine limitations etc.

Turn all the settings up to max and then tell us how it feels.

Those specs were at high settings, I just tried medium to see if it made any difference, but not really..

Not sure, I will double check the usage..

Yeah, dual Channel memory mate, it’s only 3200 but Xmp is on.

Your fps should be way higher but it's not gonna be your card limiting it. It's an old game so most likely the old game engine is playing a part. You should be able to get far more on your PC spec.

IIRC Farcry games favour Intel CPU's over AMD (or they did until X3D CPUs from AMD) so you'll always get lower FPS with equivalent AMD CPU vs Intel CPU

While i agree it's a 2014 PC game so up to date cpu's should be able to over power the game single and multi threaded. Even with this AMD cpu's of that time were rubbish compared to Ryzen cpu's so it might not be the case these days.
