Do I need a modem? Router?! Moving on from BT Smart Hub

Hi all,

I need advice as to to what new kit I need: I currently have a bt smart hub 2. Due to the size of my house I also have three google wi fi points.

Unfortunately, as it’s a personal account (rather than a business account) I’m unable to just set the smart hub to be a modem only.

I’m now trying to work out:

1. Do I replace the google wi fi with something much better (eg an ASU’s xt9)? If so, I understand I still need to get a modem - in which so what?

2. Do I scrap the google network and get a brand new high quality router/modem replacement and see if it’s better? In which case, what would you recommend?

With thanks.

What is your main motive for upgrading?

If you have a FTTC connection I would pick up a Openreach HG612 modem and use that with your choice of WiFi mesh kits. This will keep things simple and prevent double NAT.

WiFi is basically WiFi these days. There are superior access points, but not from the likes of ASUS. TP-link Omada, Ubiquiti Unifi etc. will give you more control over you wireless LAN but they’re still controlled by the laws of physics.

Double NAT is almost never an issue unless you’re very ping sensitive. Literally all it’s doing is adding a couple of packets to the Ethernet header as the data leaves the device and it’s a router and that’s what routers do.

Is it definitely FTTC ie. 70/20Mbps (where you plug a conventional phone jack into the phone socket on the wall)?
