do i need a modem with a netgear WNR854T

so you are saying i could use my old 3com modem router as the modem?

or what standalone adsl modem would be a good buy? i'm not finding much on ocuk under "ethernet modem". only 2 entries.
 
well i have already bought the netgear. it has all the features i need.

if i go for one of these modems on ocuk will it restrict all the abilities of my new router at all. like i see that the modems are 10/100 but my router is gigabit. i would think this doesn't matter as the modem is only handling net data which won't get anywhere near gigabit !!!!, but the router will allow my gigabit network cards behind it to run at gigabit.

am i right. i mean does it really matter what modem i get or will any do?
 
Tbh. I have no idea if these modems are any good for getting high syncs with poor noise ratios etc. but can say that it will not matter there being "only" 100Mbps connection between the modem and router. Your computers will still talk to each other at the full speed they are capable of doing.

would i just set the 3com up on a dmz. seems to me i'd need to cos i don't need the nat on the 3com filtering packets when they will be filtered again by the nat and spi on the netgear.
