Do I need a mouse mat?

This question sort of came up in a thread the other day, but I didn’t want to ask there as it would have taken things off topic.

So I currently have a MX900 which I use happily without a mat, planning to upgrade soon possibly to a G9 or something similar. Now I have no problems at the moment, and I find the mouse moves around smoothly enough on my wooden desktop surface, but a lot of people here seem to think a mat is needed. Just wondering if laser mice are more picky about the surface or anything like that compared to older optical mice? I’d rather not mess about with a mat if possible.

Not more picky, but it glides smoother and it reduces the wear on the pads underneath. Ive got an everglide Titan with my G5 and it works beautifully. Very smooth and when you are playing FPS games, a mouse mat makes you more accurate.

I'd use one just so I dont scratch or damage the table, even if its just a freebie one.

Slightly off topic, but I once got given a mouse mat at a work thing that was made from recycled tyres. So nice grippy rubber, just what you want for your mouse!

PK!
