Do I need a new CPU?

I think that this questions answers for itself.
Buy the new GPU and then see how that works for you.

IF you see that the CPU is struggling and you want it to go faster, then obviously you need a new one, if it however does what you ask it to do, then there's no point in changing am I right?

I was going to open up new thread, but as this thread is for the exact type of CPU i'm looking to upgrade from. I'll ask in here if the OP does not mind.

So yea, looking to upgrade from my E5200 myself seeing as i will be sooner or later looking @ the GTX 460.

Mobo is a P5Q Pro, I'm not looking to move away from the 775 socket yet,
So my only option will be Core 2 Duo's and Core 2 Quad's. Looking @ bay i've seen used Q6600's at around the £90-100 price point, is this good? It looks a better buy to me than say the Q9550 which is a tad pricier.
At £90-100.00 id be looking for a proven clocking example of a q6600, ie capabe of 3.6ghz or so, the q9550 is also a great chip, cooler running than the q6600, but as youve found it can cost a fair bit more. With your p5q pro board youd have no issues clocking either of theese quads.

My spec as in sig.
Im hoping by just changing graphics cards from 8800gtx to gtx 470 that i'll be ok?
Although when watching the gpu % used in games i found crysis used 99% with a stuttery 35fps at 1080p (8800 was 15fps) but assassins creed2 used 50% with a stuttery 40fps.
Does this mean crysis had enough cpu but maxed the gpu?
Assassins creed2 is hardly any faster than with an 8800 so is the cpu not fast enough/all cores not used?

Obviously the 470 is a good card & stuttering is down to the individuals viewpoint.
The last time i saw anything that didnt stutter was on a crt at 100hz doing a constant 90fps.

What im trying to figure out is what impact a q6600 vs i9 has in games with a good graphics card.
If crysis maxes out the gpu from an q6600 then would an i9 give many more fps?
like an extra 5fps would not be worth spending £600 in my book!
Although Assassins creed2 is the red herring here, as it gives me similar performance on a 8800 as it does a 470, so is the game maxing out the q6600 & would an i9 deliver a lot more fps in this game? Or is this particular game badly coded?

Lots of questions but very valid if you're thinking of upgrading a core2 to 'i' chip to make games better.
