Do I need a new machine?

Hi guys..

I am totally new to this PC gaming lark. The only PC game I ever play is FM!

I like to think I know a little about PCs, and know the difference between a good and a bad one. But when it comes to what I 'need' I tend to struggle... and of course, not knowing what you need means not knowing what the budget needs to be.

My son is not interested in console gaming, and only ever plays PC games. I replaced our aged home PC with a new 'family' Lenovo laptop about 18 months ago, so that he could also game on it - as he was monopolising my laptop! ;).

Specs:
Lenovo G710 / Core i7-4702MQ / 8GB RAM / NVidia GeForce 820M 2GB

I thought that was pretty good at the time...

However, he gets lots of lagging on some games such as Just Cause 3 and Minecraft.

It does get very hot - is cooling the problem?

So I took the decision that what I have bought obviously isn't suited for gaming despite the 'high' specs.
Am I right? Or is there a simple fix to this lagging, and this machine is more than adequate?

If this machine isn't suited for gaming, then I thought I would upgrade it with an SSD, some more RAM and a new video card. Turns out upgrading laptop video cards is not always possible, and if it is possible, is not straightforward.

So I am am now considering buying/building a dedicated gaming PC for him, but don't know where to begin.

On the OCUK site, there are sub £500 gaming PCs. Are they any good?
I thought gaming PCs were a lot more expensive than that?

Should I build one myself?

Don't want to throw more money away on something unsuitable for his needs.

Quite a few questions there :)

Help please?

Cheers!
