Do I need a new monitor?

I've had an old 24" LCD monitor since 2007 that I use as a second monitor but I think it is on its last legs now.

Most of the time the monitor is fine but the longer I leave it turned on the more chance there is that things start to go wrong. It is really hard to describe the problem. The picture sort of slowly starts to flicker and then after that has been going on for a while it starts to slowly change from a normal picture to black and back again. When it is doing this the picture looks like burnt tin foil (hopefully you can picture what I mean).

My main monitor is fine and has no problems at all.

Does it sound like my monitor is broken? I wouldn't be too disappointed if it was broken as I've been looking for an excuse for a new monitor for quite a long time now.

Any advice would be appreciated :).

Cool. Thanks. I'll check the cable and if that doesn't fix it I'll just replace the whole thing. I'd prefer a DisplayPort monitor anyway rather than this HDMI one as I have more mini DisplayPort ports on my graphics card.
