Do I Need a New PC?

Hi All,

I have had my PC, as it is now, for many years. I use it almost entirely for internet browsing, TV and gaming. Up to now it has performed excellently, allowing great multi tasking and allowing me to play games at a close to or at full settings at 1920x1200.

Recently (Far Cry 2, NFS Most Wanted, Hitman: Absolution) it has been needing medium to medium high graphics settings to achieve a 40+ FPS, the level which I feel comfortable at FPS wise.

Do you think I can get away with just getting new GFX cards or is the aging architecture of the 775 socket with a Core2 CPU going to hold me back from where I want to be?

Please understand that although I would love to replace it all (I agree it is about time and the most ideal situation) I just cant afford to do it. Also, I am not interested in just getting the best for bragging rights. I just need it to handle modern gaming at a 40+ FPS standard at full GFX settings.

Thanks for taking the time to read the above, it really is appreciated. Please find my full spec below.

EVGA 780i FTW
Intel Core2Quad Q9650 @ 4Ghz
4GB DDR2 @ 880MHZ
2 X GTX260 in SLI
750W PSU

Thanks again

A Q9650 @ 4GHz is still a decent processor.

Upgrade the graphics and see how it goes. Replace the rest if it proves necessary, and when you can afford it.

7950 offers fantastic bang for buck or spend a little more on a 660Ti or 670. Was very impressed with my brother in laws 7950, performs very well and plays dirt 3' f1 etc on high settings with eyefinity.

Thanks for the great replies and discussions.

I think I am going to go for new gfx and see how it fairs for a while.

I have seen a couple of different cards being mentioned. To clarify, I would want to stay with nvidia.

Next thin to address is do I go for 1 or 2 cards and in each scenario which card?

Again, any help much appreciated

All relies on your budget. Stay single card. A gtx 670 would be ideal, if that's a bit pricey the 660ti is also good. If both aren't in your budget your better looking at an and cards 7850/7870/7950

Thanks for the GFX suggestions.

do you think a single 660 would dramatically out perform my 2 260 (216) cards?

Also, is it worth the extra cash for the Ti?

Thanks

id skip going with dual cards and just get one card, 7950 is a great card for the price, you wouldn't need 2 cards. I would also get an SSD a worthy upgrade.

Think I might go for the 660ti, that way I can get another down the line if I want to go SLI again. Anyone link me to a review or ideally, benchmarks?

PSU wise I have a thermaltake toughpower 750w. Will this cope with a single 660ti?

At risk of repeating myself, thanks for all the help. I used to be well up on knowledge and was helping others but I have been out the hardware scene since the end of 775 socket over to the i processor generation.
