Hi again, following on from https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18748476 to which I thought resolved the issue of my brothers computer sparking (an electrician changed the wall socket).

He said it started sparking again, so I went and had a look and took a video of it: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0ByajPKs80dQ7LXZiSElxSF9zY1U

Orange spark from the back, doesn't matter if you turn it on from the mains/surge or switch at back of the PSU it sparks orange (sometimes a faint burning smell).

I am now fully convinced he needs to replace the PSU as soon as possible which I now have a spare lying around and will likely do.

Can anyone confirm from that video if you think the PSU is now looking responsible? All signs seem to point to yes and I cannot see anything shorting it or loose cables etc, just seemed odd it was working for him for about a week and started playing up again.

Thanks :)

Just to add, the only strange thing is - it only ever seems to spark in one room, when we tried it downstairs it didn't seem to spark which is odd but then so is the consistency of the sparking. He must have faulty electrics in that one room or it was just by chance it never sparked in the other room.

There are a number of electronic devices on the PSU mains input that are there to take the spark away. Something there has failed.

Replacement PSU required. Unless you fancy replacing capacitors, chokes and thermistors inside the PSU.

Hi guys, replaced his psu with my recent Corsair RM850 and early tests seems fine, no sparks or anything out of the ordinary.

Will see how he gets on with it. One thing I noticed when I removed his likely faulty psu it makes a kind of rattle if you gently move it around (something broken off maybe inside?).

Anyway all good so far touch wood :)

I'm amazed you did that for the camera, what if it went BOOM and wiped out your beloved PC? :p

Maybe a capacitor or something else came loose? Or a screw fell into the PSU?
Either way I am glad you sorted it mate, great stuff.

I was not worried as it was my brothers my pc :D But yeah it was risky but at the same time wanted to capture the spark to give you guys more ideas on the situation.

Sounds too small to be a screw I think so possibly some other internal component.

are you wise enough in he head!? very apt username :p

Not always so wise granted :D FWIW my username was meant to have the meaning of been mad about newcastle united but I guess the mad part might have some other close meaning :D

Update guys, the RMA has been sorted with EVGA and they have now sent a replacement one.

There was no included information however so I cannot say exactly what the fault was, I don't even know if they are sending a completely new replacement or just a single working power supply.

Either way I am quite pleased with how quick EVGA handled the RMA process which is one of the reasons I try to choose them when possible as they do seem to have brilliant customer service :)

Good stuff, its good to know im buying from a company that looks after its customers, even if i do tend to void all my warranties.

To be honest, its only in the the last couple of years that I now try to buy from EVGA when possible because others swear by there customer service so it's good to know you are in safe hands. I didn't even need to send the faulty psu abroad or anything it went to somewhere in Lancaster, UK if I recall correctly.

The whole EVGA RMA process seemed to go rather quick and as smooth as you like which is terrific, they even reply to your support tickets in a fairly reasonable time.

A lot of other companies could learn a lot from how to deal with customers a lot better. :)
