Do I need a new PSU

I've been having a few probs with my new Sapphire x1950pro 512mb agp. After RMAing it I was told that it's ok. The main trouble I have is whilst playing World of Warcraft. I can generally play for 5-10 minutes, then the screen will freeze, music will loop, then all goes dark :eek: and I have to manually reset. When the card came back last week, I managed to play for 3 hours continually and had to go out. when I came back I got 5-10 minutes play before crash. I ran 3DMark03, starting at lowest setting, then gradually increasing them. That crashed in exactly the same way after my third increase.
I've tried Omega drivers as well as official ATI ones. (Followed instructions about proper uninstalling them too).
Got 2GB of Geil value RAM today and running them in dual channel mode.
Atm. I've got a friends 6600GT in, and that can run WoW for hours with no troubles. Basically, I'm now pulling out what's left of my hair. The only thing I can think of is maybe I need a new PSU. Any ideas folks?

There are two molexes on my PSU marked HDD/VGA, I'm wondering, as this PSU was made before 2 molexes were required to run graphic cards, and bearing in mind, I'm finding it hard to understand voltages/rails etc(so please don't be too hard on me), would both of these molexi be running off the same rail? If I used just one of these blue ones and a normal white one instead, would this solve my problems? I've been told my PSU is man enough for the job, but is it?
I really am at the end of my limited tecchy knowledge and am totally stumped. Can any of you clever people please help this old idiot.
 
This is imteresting as my old x1800xl did exactly the same, sapphire as well. I tried rma'ing it but it got sent back to me. Only method i could find to stop it was to lower the draw distance on games to minimum, but even then that didnt completely stop the problems.

Any help would be appreciated
 
How strange. My last card was an x800xl. I had it for just over a year, then it just died. Didn't have any wow probs with it tho.
 
Its either, the motherboard not suppling enough juice to the AGP slot.

Or the rails on the Tagen not hitting 38a on the 12v rail continuously.


Edit:

Quick look at your PSU's spec;

• 12V / 18A up to 28A rail for stable powering of peripheral devices


So yeah, new PSU.

(Read the side of the packaging on the x1950 pro its states what rail amp'age you need)

I bought an HX520W to replace an aging Thermaltake 380W supply that didn't have enough 12V amps for my new X1950Pro AGP card. The Corsair is fantastic:

1. It's totally inaudible over the other fans and hard disks in my system. The 120mm fan barely has to spin to provide more flow than the twin 80mm fans in the old Thermaltake.
2. Design & build quality are fantastic - for example the all-black modular cables have the nice touch of squeezable molex connectors that are easy to remove no matter how hard you ram them into the sockets.
3. It's made by Seasonic and is identical to the M12, but cheaper. Check out the review at silentpcreview.com for more information.
4. Corsair give you a five year warranty.

It's just one of those bits of kit where you open the box and instantly feel that you've got a really good deal. Nice.

Id say it would. I very much doubt you'll have any problems with that motherboard. Unless it is a very old model. (Can't really have to much of a look about as I am at work)
 
My board has ATX 20-pin (JWR1) and ATX 12V (JPW1) power connectors. I've just been looking at the Corsair spec and have read something that concerns me, even though the majority of it is flying right over my head.
the Corsair is backwards compatible with ATX12V 2.01 systems. My Tagan is compatible with ATX12V 2.0. I don't know what ATX12V system mine is. Will whatever the difference between 2.0 and 2.01 is, affect me? Only, I want to be sure that The Corsair will be ok with my system. Don't want to end up with a useless PSU :rolleyes:

Just had a thought. If I disconnected my DVD-ROM, extra hard drive, floppy and the side and front fans (I've got a 12cm at the rear, drawing the air out), will this give a bit more juice to power the Sapphire until I can fit the Corsair?

Words cannot explain how i'm feeling right now. unplugged all i said i would. reboot, "disc error". fiddled about a bit, still "disc error". thought i may as well format as there was nowt else i could do, cos "disc error" wouldn't go away. So at 7pm last night, I started, one less h/d, two less fans.Windows, Warcraft and all their ******* updates, 4am in the morning, i logged in to WoW, online for less than 2minutes and CRASH!!!!!
It's now gone 5 am, my mate's 6600gt back in now. Anybody wanna buy an X1950Pro? I'm getting an Nvidia.



Thank heavens for Stella Artois :p I'd have gone to bed well before now if it wasn't for that golden liquor. Feel like getting a playstation.

That's a ATX v1.3 mobo. But pretty sure the HX520W is compatible because the last 4-pins of the ATX connector can be separated :)
 
Got a 7600GT today. I know it's a bit of a drop from an x1950, but at least it works. All settings in WoW are medium-high, but mostly high, no crashes, and I am happy at long last. Dwbreeze 1982, you may not be wrong mate ;)
**** knows what the problem was before, but all is well now.
