Do I need a new PSU?

Hi everyone,

I'm very close to buying this i7 bundle: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-043-OE&groupid=43&catid=339&subcat=1675

I'm just wondering about my PSU... I've got a Seasonic S12 600w which I bought a couple of years back. It's only got a 4-pin 12v cable and I notice the Asus P6TD Deluxe has an 8-pin connector. As the build will be heavily overclocked quad-core, do I need to purchase a new PSU with an 8-pin 12v cable??

I can see you can plug in a 4-pin 12v cable but I'm not sure this will give enough power?

Thanks in advance :)

Agreed. if you plan to use that 260 then, yes... you will need a new PSU, i am sure your SS600 will run but it will be at the redline untill it goes "POP"

Thanks for the replies.

I'm not worried about whether it will power the graphics card - it's perfectly powerful enough for that. The Seasonic S12 600w I was rated very highly at the time and it copes with the GTX260 no problems.

I'm just concerned that it doesn't have an 8-pin 12v connector (only 4-pin) and therefore might underpower the i7 930 overclocked at 4Ghz. It's fair chunk of cash for a new PSU (I'd get the Antec Truepower 650w for £79 probably) and I just want to know if this reason alone is enough to justify the outlay...?

That PSU is much too good to replace yet, better than the Stealthstreams I'd say. Just use the 4 pin in the relevant half of the socket, you'll be fine.

Aye it's a great PSU and I paid over £100 for it a couple of years back. I've read that the 8-pin connector spreads the load and therefore provides "more power and stability" for quad cores. I may just stick with mine and if I get any stability issues upgrade to another one then...
