Do I need a newer Router for 8Mb ADSL?

I've just moved from Plusnet to Newnet,, with th hope of actually getting somewhere near 8Mb as I'm only 1/2 mile from the Exchange.

Now on plusnet the most I got was 3Mb.

Now I know I'm still in the first 10 Days, but currently the max I've ever got is 3.9MB and thats only once.

Now, I know if I remove the extension from my house, and go straight to the master socket, I get a but more, maybe 1/2Mb, but my mate over the road with a Draytek Router (New) is getting 7Mb.

Is it just that my BT Voyager 2100 is past its sell buy date, and not supporting ADSL Max properly? or is there something else I need to do?

Thanks in advance.

Try and get your Attenuation and SNR from the modem and post it. Maybe that is what is limiting it.

You never get anything close to 8mb anyway - its a theoretical maximum

Also line quality, quality of wiring in the house etc has a big effect on speeds.

Yeah but my neighbour gets between 6 and 7, which I would be happy with.

You're getting 7Mbps. Your IP rate should increase to match it, assuming that sync rate is stable.

By IP rate you mean my download speed from speed tests etc? Thats what I'm after.

What do you mean sync rate?

Yup.

What I quoted.

In that case my Sync rate has always been fairly consitant, even when on Plusnet.

I guess have I have to wait till the end of my 10 days and see what the speed tests are like then.

Currently there anywhere between 1Mb and 4Mb.

You should see full rate at off-peak times within 3 days of activation (the new BT Speedtest will give you your IP rate) - you almost certainly won't see it at peak times thanks to congestion either at the ISP or within the BTw network.
If it's still stuck, you need to contact your ISP.
