I have the DFI Lanparty UT NF4-D Mobo with the Karajan Audio (Theater like7.1 /8ch supported) onboard audio.

I am soon to get the SeinHeiser PC160 headset and I wondered if I would benefit much from getting the Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme?

Any Ideas??

A lot of the newer motherboards have quite good onboard sound, though the X-Fi cards are pretty sweet sounding. You probably will notice an improvement overall.

Some motherboards do offer reasonable sound. In my opinion it is worth getting a seperate soundcard though. My mate has just switched from an onboard. Voice comms is noticeably better quality and louder. If you are getting a decent Headset and Mic why compromise it. It is down to personal preference
as these things always are. I would get a seperate s/c. Thats just my two bits worth. Others might argue it isn't worth the expenditure, then again others may support it's worth.

Either way enjoy your new phones and s/c if you get it.

I think you need a sound card.

I noticed a big difference when I went from onboard sound to an Audigy 2 value.

At the moment i'm looking at purchasing an audigy 4 for my new computer.

I believe there is a significant difference. Especially with games like GrandTheftAuto and CSS.

But NOT Audigy SE, that uses a software decoder. You need to get Audigy 4 (only £35) or better.

The only onboard sound I've used which I would describe as good is the Soundstorm used on Nforce2 chipsets - that was very good quality for music.

Funny you say that, because it's a Soundstorm which is on the machine I'm considering getting a sound card for. But it's not really for sound, more to reduce load on the CPU. Wondered if it was worth it.

I use headphones a lot and often find theres a little background noise with onboard sound when the volumes up load so if using headphones a lot I would opt for a dedicated card.
