Do I need a TV or a Monitor?

Hi,

I'm looking at putting together a gaming computer for myself. Now, once I've done this, I'll want to use it for watching streamed football, playing games (like Total War: Rome II) and general messing around with large Excel spreadsheets.

I've been looking around, and I like the idea of getting a 24" TV to connect to the PC, rather than a 24" inch montior.

This is where I'm unsure; if they're both 1080p...will the resolution look EXACTLY the same on both, or is it better to go for one over the other?

I really need to the high resolution/detail for gaming, but it would be nice to have a TV that I could re-use at a later point.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

Thanks Platinum - yeah I like the idea of extra functionality, potential further uses, etc.

However, what I'm really unsure about it whether the picture quality will be different??
Ideally, I want as crisp a look as possible, but I'm unsure whether going for a TV would detract from that in some way??

It really depends on the model - many TVs incorporate non-defeatable image processing of one kind or another, which may benefit them for their primary use but won't make them brilliant as monitors.

I'd pick the right tool for the job if I were you, and in most scenarios (especially if you'll be spending a fair amount of time in Excel), that will be a purpose-designed PC monitor.

Yeah you may find its not as clear as a monitor and it basicly comes down to the fact of need if you already have a tv theres no point or if you dont there would be.

Used a Samsung led TV recently with a pc and found if you edit the source to pc (Source>tools>edit name) that it disables the TVs processing and browser text and image quality was so much clearer.
