Hey guys,

I'm upgrading to fibre broadband and wondering if a standard CAT5 cable will suffice or will I notice a difference with CAT6 for the internet.

It is only going to be up to 38 megs per second. Cheers.

Cat5e should be fine, however looking on eBay the price difference is so tiny i am upgrading my cabling to cat6.

Cat5e will be fine.

Don't use Cat5 (although you'd have difficulty even finding it knowadays).

Cat5e will handle Gigabit at 100m, and possibly 10GbE over shorter distances.

No real advantage to Cat6. It's certainly not worth ripping Cat5e out to replace it with Cat6.

Cat5e. I'd avoid ebay or amazon resellers for cable. Lots of fake crap out there, it can cause fires.

Fires? Even with PoE and a dead short I can't see how a network cable could cause a fire.

Is this something that has actually happened?

Yes. Copper-Clad-Aluminium is very commonly sold to consumers and heck I even see electricians using it from the wholesalers. It was never ever designed to carry power and we're seeing a huge surge in PoE. It doesn't have the heat dissipation of solid copper and thus can cause fires, better yet most of it is also PVC and not LSOH.

CCA causing fires? Come off it.

It's not ideal for long term (20+ years) installations, but other than that it's fine.

o.O

I'd be very concerned if you had any commercial experience. CCA is not compliant to any of the standards I'm aware of. I've come across it a few times before and it fails tests. Mainly in electricans installs where we're deploying hardware, we'll always tend to run a certification test on the cabling as a demarcation check. Always comes and bites them where it hurts when they get charged rectification day rates on work thats completed

Normal CCA would 'be fine', but there is a lot of crap out there with fake certifications stamped on the cable.

Good cat5e cable will be more than enough, make sure you don't get the really cheap stuff as they use aluminum with a copper coating.
