Do I need extension cables when using a fan controller?

I have just bought one of these to control 6 fans:

My question is, do I need extension cables for my SP120 fans for them to reach this? I have never used one of these before. My case is a Corsair carbide 540, the fans will be attached to radiators on the top and front of the case.

See if your fan cables will reach the bay where the fan controller will be. If they do then no. If they don't then yes.

yeah I just haven't set it up yet, the cables on the fans seem quite short, do most people end up using extensions then? they look like they are about £4.99 each as well

I've got the fc6 here and its cables are long enough to reach about 2" from the end of my enthoo primo case. Which os much deeper than the 540 so you should be fine.
