Do i need modem, if i want to use router?

Ok, so here it goes. There are LAN cable going directly to my pc w/o modem, now there are couple of notebooks in the house, so i need router, so here's the question, do i need to plug in my LAN cable in to the modem, then in to router, or i can directly connect in to the router, and then to my pc, and wireless to my notebooks? If i don't need modem, can u offer me wireless router for about 60-70 pounds?

Well, there's no phone line in my apartment, so i assume I'm on cable
