Hi im interested in getting this monitor for the 120hz and 3D Asus VG278H 27" TRUE 120Hz 3D Widescreen LED Monitor with NVIDIA 3D Vision 2.0 Glasses - Black [VG278H]
I have a HD690 2gb GPU, will the 3D work on this? if not what an equivalent monitor size and 120hz that would work with it?
Thanks

Hi there,

Yes you can get proper 3D with an AMD graphics card - but you need to make sure you go for a monitor that specifically works for AMD's 3D technology.

For example that ASUS monitor is made specifically for Nvidia's 3D tech. Therefore, the only way to use it to it's full potential (ie get it running 3D at 1080@60Hz per eye) is to use an Nvidia graphics card with it. An AMD card will work via the HDMI 1.4 connection, however, it will be limited to 3D at 1080p@30Hz or 720p@60Hz due to bandwidth restrictions of HDMI.

Instead, for an AMD card and 3D you ideally want a monitor that incorportates the 3D glasses syncing into the monitor and does 3D via Displayport (though some Dual-like DVI monitors will work).

For a 27in monitor, the only good options for running an AMD card in 3D are the Samsung S27A750D or S27A950D.

To get the 3D working you should use the displayport input and tridef 3D software.

Thanks for the reply, im wondering weather to sell my hd 6970 2gb card and get an nvidia as i like the Asus monitor, what is a good Nvidia GPU for around the same price of a 6970 or better around the £300 mark?
Regards
Guy

For £300 the Nvidia card to have is the GTX 580 at the moment and for £200 it is the GTX 570.

However, bear in mind that new Kepler 28nm cards (like the GTX 670Ti and GTX 660) are expected in May and they are likely to offer more performance than these 500 series cards.

That said, if you want a 27in 3D monitor and ignore the graphics card requirements then I would personally go for the Samsung S27A750D over the ASUS 27in - as the ASUS supposedly does suffer from problems with backlight bleeding and the samsung seems to get nothing but praise.

Here is a very in-depth review of the S27A750D by our very own PCM2.

@cmndr i can't thank you enough for your in depth and helpfull replies, i remember using that site to set up the colours on my Samsung syncmaster! many thanks again.

I think i will buy the monitor in the review could you point me to the lead i need to get the full 120Hz? I have 2 DVI,2 small HDMI and 1 normal HDMI on my HD 6970 GPU.
Thanks

The S27A750D?

To connect that up to your graphics card you will want to use a mini-displayport (male) to displayport (male) cable. Strangely OCUK don't seem to sell these, but if you have a google for "StarTech.com Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort Adapter Cable 1.8m" you should find one for ~£6.

Yeah the s27a750d, i was hoping to get it all from OC, shame i will have a look thanks again.

If it's a standard HD 6950 then the only displayport connections it will have are of the mini-displayport type - which unfortunately that cable can't fit into. However, if you have a mini-Displayport to displayport adapter that came with your graphics card then you will be able to use that cable you linked to.

hi the card is a HD 6970 so i dont know if the connectors are any different in those models.
Thanks

Do you know the make and model number of your card? With this info we can check all the connector types.

To show you the standard connector configration of a HD 6950/6970 card - here is an image. Does your one look like this at the back?

yeah just looked mine up on the oc website these are the ports its the xfx HD 6970 2gb card this is under specs:
Display Connectors: 1x Dual-Link DVI, 1x Single-Link DVI, 1x HDMI & 2x Mini-DisplayPort
Thanks

Excellent.

So you will be looking for a "StarTech.com Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort Adapter Cable 1.8m" or similar to connect this monitor to your current graphics card.

Ok i think i found the one you mean in a local store that i dont think we can mention, does it matter in the specs that it say Apple mini, or is that just because thats a standard for apple that they use?
thanks a lot for your help.
regards
Guy

I think it's OK for you to say the full name of the cable (though don't link to it), since OCUK don't currently sell anything to compete with it.

The apple displayport adapters are generally converting mini-DP to something else (like VGA, HDMI, DVI), but in your case you just want one that converts from mini-DP to full-size DP.
