Thinking about picking up a 9800X3D when i can i was wondering if the 5090 will need a pcie 5.0 motherboard to work at it's best? or is this still conjecture?

if so which Asus (fanboy) motherboard should i purchase?

thanks in advance :)

Unlikely that you will need it (based on how the 4090 performs in a PCI-E 3.0 board), but if you're going to fork out the £2K+ for a high-end card the relatively tiny saving on buying a motherboard without PCIE 5.0 seems... odd.

The Asus X870 boards are rather pricey, so if you don't care about USB4 I'd suggest looking for a nice deal on the Strix B650E-F or B650E-E (plenty of users of both boards on here).

Exactly this. It probably won’t make enough of a difference but at the same time it would be illogical to put it with anything less?

Well i'll sell my 4090 to get a 5090 so the outlay wont be too much (famous last words) but having to also buy a new MB, RAM, CPU, Case and a PSU it's getting costly and as they say every little helps

True :D

Realistically though, the difference between the cheap choice and the expensive choice for each of those options is like... £200? Compared to the 5090, it is small beans unless you went super cheap.

E.g.
(Can't add the 9800X3D to spec right now)
