Do I NEED PowerDVD ? (CCCP Related)

Hi guys,

So i've been bought up thinking i need PowerDVD to play DVDs on my computer.

But now i've been reading up on ffdshow, CCCP etc - so am i right in saying that, plain and simple, if I have say CCCP and WMP10 on a fresh Windows XP install thats me sorted right there for playing DVDs!?
(If so i'm a sucker for buying this software for years on end!)

You basically need any MPEG2 decoder, so that's PowerDVD, WinDVD, nvDVD, nVidia Purevideo decoder, etc.

If the codec pack contains an MPEG2 decoder you're all sorted, but the decoders are generally paid-for as there's some licensing involved.

Pretty much every decent codec pack comes with an mpeg2 decoder.

You can just use VLC for simplicity.

Thats the thing, i want to use WMP for all my things, music, films, dvds, as a all in one. Don't want to change from WMP!

If you look here you can see that it does indeed have an MPEG2 decoder.

I myself use ffdshow and then follow guides on the net to tweak it. Works great, never had any problems with it.

codec packs are a POS

use ffdshow http://www.free-codecs.com/download/FFDShow.htm
and media player classic http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Media_Player_Classic.htm

if you refuse to change media player, use this to enable dvd/mpeg playback (works as a decoder in MCE too)

If you install K-Lite codec pack (full) You can still run all your media through WMP if you so wish

I use the CCCP, never come across anything i can't play yet, works a treat.
