Hiya, just asking for a bit of help to clear this one up, I do a bit of off roading with a friend of mine but the fourtrak I use runs out of MOT and tax on the the 31st of this month (I still have DOC insurance so am insured) and what I am wondering is whether It is still legal to drive it on salisbury plain and byways around there but not on any actual roads as in with traffic and surfaced.

I have found a few bits through google but its all a bit vague really, thanks for your help, (the chances of being seen by the police or even another car are very very very low to non existant anyway but I just would like to be sure)

i assume you mean green laneing, yes you do need all of them, as it is road just unmade, is the car in your name (v5) if it is your DOC cover may not cover you, most dont.

no MOT doesnt void your insurance unless your on the road and the accident is caused by a dangerous fault that would be picked up through an mot like no brakes or spikes on the front or something silly, and no its not in my name so the DOC does cover me, I was under the impression that if the road wasnt kept/repaired through public money you didnt need an mot to go on it?

road is a road, you still need it all. Chances of see a police man very low but one of the green nazi could report you, i want to go green laning in the summer on my bike and regardless of where it is a byeway requires you to have mot/insurnace and tax. It's a road just unmade.

Waste ground (where i learnt to ride) is fine dont need any thing.

a) If your planning on going up on the plains when they are open then they are classed as public road, therefore requiring all the legal mumbo jumbo you would need on any road.

b) And goodluck getting any fun on the plains either. All the roads that are open (which isnt many) are either tarmac or just potholed, and leaving the road means you risk being blown apart by a shell, or being caught by the ever increasing warden patrols who will take joy in confiscating your vehicle and fining you. TBH, all opening the plains does is allow access to Imber, which is interesting the first time you see it, but there no fun left up there any more.

I can remember as a kid playign around in blown out tanks, collecting bullet cartridges and parachites from flares an all sorts of cool stuff. Nowadays, you cant even walk the 10 meters from the road to the stripped out buildings in Imber.

We went down there yesterday and ahd amazing fun did about 20 miles worth (doesnt sound much but on there it is :D) saw three other vehicles the whole time, one nissan one defender anda white military police landy which paid us no attention at all so neah! :p

If the defender was blue its probubly another warden. They have obvisouly got bored, but last easter they were on a rampage. They were prepaired to report you for standing on the grass verge!

I thought it was public right of way though ? obviously not on the actual firing range bits, (we turned around when giant white cordens with DO NOT DIG and DO NOT SMOKE and DANGER OF DEATH started to crop up

The roads that are open are public right of way, and the roads ONLY. And this is usually only the 2 main ones which run from Warminster accross to just below Lavington and the one that runs from Bratton down to the far side of Warminster. I dont know about the other half of the plain so much, dont go over there. It is however only the physical tarmac. leaving and touching the grass is tresspassing. You used to be able to wander about all over the place, but they have spoilt that now.

If you can get a fast car and get onto the new massive wide tarmac road that runs accross the middle without getting caught though its trully epic! But this isnt open and is heavily patrolled :(

someone needs to get an OS map of salisbury plain and know what their talking about *cough* Skeeter *cough*.... then u might know what your talking about....

are you sure DOC covers you? im sure that the other car has to actually be insured, before your allowed to drive it under DOC.

Noooo. Why do so many people think this!

However in this case DOC wouldnt work as sounds like he wants to use a car he owns with his DOC cover which wont work at all as you cant use DOC on a car you own, hire for reward or renting.

nah it was (now run out of mot and tax so wont be using it anymore!) and still is owned by a friend never was in my name or owned by me

yah. we shant be using it again now anyway. its the farm truck now untill i can get rid of it im affraid. Anyone know the scrap value atm ??? or perhaps wanna buy it *rolls eyes* .... needs a bit of welding... thats about it :P

From what i understand you dont need any mot or insurance if your driving on private land (obviously with the owners permission). Salisbury plain isnt private land so threfore you will need to have the vehicle MOT'd and Insured.
